(Takes place in Kjerringöy in Bodø municipality, northern Norway)
How does the interaction between nature and architecture affect the perception of a place, can a place have a certain rhythm, a soundtrack? How do nature and architecture communicate with each other, do they sing with the same voice?
Composition for 15 buildings surrounded by nature is an audiovisual interpretation of Kjerringøy trading post in Bodø municipality. The composition will be performed in collaboration with the local senior center and invited participants from Kjerringøy.
The project’s decoding method is based in the audiovisual intersection between architecture and nature. The sound composition is created by analyzing and remixing the place’s man-made (architecture) and organic (nature) design. Process and documentation are presented as a photo exhibition in addition to the sound-based performance.
Kjerringøy trading post is a unique cultural monument from the 19th century that is frozen in time. 15 listed buildings with authentic interiors are beautifully situated by Kjerringøysundet. A visit there is a journey back to the Nordland boat and the age of the yachts, a time created by dried fish and cod liver oil. The space provides a unique insight into life at a northern Norwegian trading post which constituted a turning point in the history of northern Norway. With the trading posts, the trade monopoly of the cities in the south was abolished, and more of the profits from the fish trade in the north remained in the region. The trading post’s operations were discontinued at the end of the 1950s and the Nordlandsmuseet now runs the trading post as a museum.
